Purchase of flame-retardant polyester yarn: Whether the "outlet" process is quick or not, it mainly depends on these two factors.

flame-retardant polyester yarn (polyester flame-retardant yarn) is widely used in curtains, sofa fabrics, automotive interiors, protective clothing, tents, etc. Its flame-retardant property directly affects fire safety. In recent years, the downstream industries have put forward higher requirements for the persistence, environmental friendliness and balance with other properties (such as strength, feel) of the flame-retardant effect. Below, from the perspective of industry trends, we provide you with reference.

1. Flame retardant method: Masterbatch addition is becoming the mainstream.

In the early days, flame-retardant polyester yarns were mostly treated through post-treatment coating methods, that is, after the fabric was woven, a flame-retardant agent was impregnated onto the yarns. This method had a lower cost, but the flame-retardant agent was attached to the surface of the fibers, which was not resistant to washing and friction, and it could also affect the fabric's feel.

Batch-forming type offers more lasting effect: Currently, the industry tends to adopt the method of adding flame retardant to the batch-forming process, that is, integrating the flame retardant into the interior of the fibers during the spinning stage. This method provides a more lasting flame retardant effect, is resistant to water washing and dry cleaning, and has a relatively small impact on the fabric feel. When used for products such as car interiors, curtains, protective clothing, etc., which require long-term retention of flame retardant properties, it is recommended to choose batch-forming type flame-retardant yarn.

Enhanced environmental protection requirements: Some traditional flame retardants (such as halogen-based ones) may produce smoke and harmful gases during combustion. In recent years, the application of halogen-free, low-smoke, and low-toxicity flame retardant systems has gradually increased. When purchasing, you can inquire with the supplier whether they use environmentally friendly flame retardants and request relevant test reports (such as RoHS, REACH, etc.).

Functional integration: Flame-retardant fibers can also be combined with anti-static and anti-aging functions, and be used in specific scenarios. For example, flame-retardant fibers for anti-static work clothes can be additionally added with anti-static masterbatch to reduce the post-combination process.

II. Balancing Flame Retardancy, Drapeability and Handfeel

Adding flame retardants may have certain impacts on the spinning process and final performance of polyester fibers. How to ensure the flame retardant effect while also maintaining the processability and hand feel is a reflection of the supplier's processing capabilities.

Impact on processability: The addition of flame-retardant masterbatch may alter the melt flowability, increase the breakage rate during spinning or the risk of filter blockage. Experienced suppliers will reduce this impact by adjusting the spinning temperature, component combination, and the particle size distribution of the flame-retardant masterbatch. During procurement, you can inquire about the usage feedback of similar products from other customers' production lines from the supplier.

Impact on strength: The addition of flame retardants usually causes a slight decrease in the absolute strength of the fibers, but this should be controlled within an acceptable range. During procurement, suppliers can be requested to provide strength comparison data between flame-retardant fibers and regular fibers of the same specification, and the rate of strength loss can be evaluated.

Impact on color: Some flame retardants themselves have color or may affect the coloration of color masterbatches. When using light-colored or bright-colored flame-retardant fabrics, it is recommended to sample and make a pattern first to confirm the color difference. Dark colors (such as black, navy blue) have a higher tolerance for color differences and the impact is relatively smaller.

Flame retardant grade confirmation: The requirements for flame retardant grades vary across different industries (for example, automotive interiors, curtains, and protective clothing each have their own standards). Before purchasing, please clearly define the flame retardant standards you need to meet (such as GB/T, EN, ASTM, etc.). The supplier can then adjust the addition ratio and system of the flame retardant masterbatch accordingly.

Summary and Selection Suggestions

When purchasing flame-retardant polyester yarn, it is recommended to follow the steps below for confirmation:

Pre-determined flame retardant method: Does it need to be resistant to water washing? Is it used for permanent flame retardant products? Preferentially choose the type with masterbatch addition; for one-time or low-cost products, consider post-treatment of the fabric (such as directly purchasing flame retardant coated fabric).

Clarify the environmental protection and grade requirements: Are there any requirements for halogen-free, low smoke, and low toxicity? Inform the target flame retardant standards (such as GB 20286, EN 13501, etc.) so that the suppliers can make corresponding adjustments.

Final sample verification: Request samples of flame-retardant yarn, fabric them into products and send them to a third-party testing institution for flame-retardant testing. At the same time, evaluate whether the strength, feel and color meet the expectations.

Changzhou Shengjie Heuli Chemical Fibers Co., Ltd. has extensive experience in the chemical fiber industry and specializes in high-strength polyester industrial yarn, high-strength nylon industrial yarn, high-strength polypropylene industrial yarn, polyester flame-retardant yarn, polypropylene flame-retardant yarn, polyester FDY yarn, and variable-width yarn, etc. It can provide flame-retardant masterbatch addition solutions.
